He's just paranoid, noone will be able to find out your last name. The reason they have you do it is if one of your friends tries to find you on there they can search with your last name but it will never be shown to anyone. It's only used when a friend of your knows it already.

If you don't put your last name in, the only downside is your friends and relatives won't be able to find you on myspace.

make up a last name. I have one and yes I used my last name but that part is not shown anyway. If you or your dad is unsure of the last name just make something up. I as an adult however would suggest not going on myspace. There are a lot of predators using myspace and well a lot of pictures and things are said that children you not see or read. When I signed up I read that myspace was intended for 18 and older as well.
